# Claim a username

> Optionally claim a sandbox @handle from Settings so others can offramp to you by name.

A Veil username is a permanent `@handle` that lets others offramp into your primary bank account without ever seeing your bank details. Claiming one in sandbox is optional — you can run offramps without a username — but it lets you test handle-routed offramps end to end.

## How to claim

Open the dashboard, go to **Settings**, and look for the username section. Enter your preferred handle and confirm.

<Note>
  Usernames are claimed from Settings, not during onboarding. You do not need a username to complete sandbox onboarding or to run your first offramp.
</Note>

## Sandbox handles are separate from production handles

Handles are scoped per environment mode. The same `@handle` can exist in both sandbox and production, owned by different users. A handle you claim in sandbox does not carry over to production — you would claim it separately there.

See [Sandbox vs. production](/concepts/sandbox-vs-production) for more on per-mode uniqueness.

## Renaming

Sandbox has no rename cooldown by default, so you can iterate freely. Production has a short cooldown after each rename. If you rename while another user has a pending offramp to your previous handle, their offramp is rejected when they submit.
